The Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society Education Committee, in partnership with the Minnesota Supreme Court, the Minnesota State Bar Association Civic Education Committee, and the Learning Law and Democracy Foundation, sponsored a workshop in the summer of 2010 entitled “Understanding Minnesota’s Judiciary” for ten Minnesota high school civics and government teachers who had previously demonstrated exemplary work in teaching civic education and, in particular, the third branch of government. The invited teachers heard from present and former Minnesota Supreme Court justices on three topics: Judicial Decision Making, Judicial Impartiality, and the Differences Between Judges and Legislators. Following the presentations, the teachers then divided into three groups and developed lesson plans that would help them and other teachers around the state educate their students about the three featured topics. During the summer, many of these participating educators worked with Jennifer Bloom of the Learning Law and Democracy Foundation to fine tune the plans, which were then presented to other teachers attending the 2011 Minnesota Council for Social Studies Spring Conference. These lesson plans are now being implemented.
